About
'Baldsmith' is a dwarf laceleaf dissectum cultivar with finely divided foliage that emerges bright pink in spring, gradually transitioning to soft green by midsummer while maintaining persistent pink-to-red new growth flushes across the canopy, and finishing with warm orange to yellow tones in autumn. The tree develops a low, spreading umbrella form, reaching approximately 5-6 feet tall by 5.5-8 feet wide over ten years. According to the growers at Mr Maple, the cultivar is named after Bartholomew Smith, a blacksmith, and is prized for displaying some of the most intense sustained pink coloration among laceleaf cultivars, a trait that makes it an effective color accent when paired with red or green maples in the landscape. The tree performs best with early morning sun to enhance spring coloring and is well-suited to both garden planting and container cultivation; it benefits from good drainage and tolerates partial afternoon shade, making it a low-maintenance, four-season performer.
