About
'Ao kanzashi' is a medium-sized, upright Japanese maple reaching 12-14 feet tall that displays distinctive variegated foliage throughout the growing season. In early spring, bright green leaf centers are bordered by vivid pink-red margins; by late spring, this border fades to cream, creating a cream-on-green appearance that persists through summer. In autumn, the green centers turn red while the cream margins shift to orange and pink tones. Morning sun with afternoon shade best preserves the vibrant variegation; according to the growers at Mr Maple, light fertilization is recommended, as excessive nitrogen can cause reversion to solid green growth. The tree performs well both in-ground and in containers, provided drainage is excellent.
