Acer palmatum 'Aka shigitatsu sawa' is a mid-sized Japanese maple that reaches 8-14 feet in height and width at maturity. Its most distinctive feature is prominently reticulated leaf venation that creates a delicate textured appearance throughout the growing season; foliage displays soft reddish and creamy tones that deepen to red in late summer and fall, layering multiple seasonal colors on the same tree. The cultivar thrives in filtered or dappled light and morning sun, making it an excellent choice for partially shaded garden locations. According to Simply Japanese Maples, this vigorous tree performs particularly well under high canopy shade and develops rich fall color on its upper foliage while lower leaves retain their green reticulated character, a trait that distinguishes the ghiku-type maples for their shade tolerance and year-round visual interest.
