Acer oliverianum 'Hot Blonde' Golden Japanese Maple

'Hot Blonde' is a vigorous, upright Acer oliverianum (believed to be a hybrid with A. shirasawanum) with broad, star-shaped leaves that emerge chartreuse-yellow in spring, developing reddish-orange margins before transitioning to pure yellow through summer, then deepening to brilliant fire-engine red in autumn. The cultivar reaches 12-14 feet tall and 6-8 feet wide at maturity, growing approximately 1.5 feet per year, and exhibits exceptional heat and sun tolerance unusual among yellow Japanese maples, an asset in warmer zones where many cultivars struggle. According to the growers at Mr Maple, 'Hot Blonde' is part of their Heat Seeker series and was selected from a seedling found in their garden; its late leafing habit, inherited from its A. shirasawanum parentage, helps it avoid spring frosts. Plant in morning sun to part shade for optimal color contrast, though it can tolerate full sun and performs reliably in zones 6-9, with promising trials underway in zone 5.
