About
Acer macrophyllum 'Tubbs Fire' is a variegated big leaf maple featuring bold yellow and white sectoring on large, native-sized leaves, with pink and white striations often visible on young bark. Growth is fairly fast, reaching approximately 25 feet in ten years, similar to the species type but slightly slower due to the variegation. The cultivar tolerates sun and moderate heat reasonably well, though the yellow leaf portions can scorch in intense sunlight; it performs best with afternoon shade in hot climates. This cultivar originated as a basal sport discovered in 2019 by Lucas Dexter growing wild in a burned area of Sonoma County, California, from the 2017 Tubbs Fire.
