Acer fabri - Emerald Jade Maple - Rare Evergreen Chinese Maple

Acer fabri is a rare Chinese evergreen maple with unlobed, glossy dark green leaves that display red-tinted new growth and bright red samaras that contrast sharply against the foliage. This shade-tolerant species typically reaches 12-14 feet in height and performs best in deep shade, though it can tolerate some sunlight. In colder climates, it may become semi-deciduous with red fall color before dropping some leaves; plants in areas with late spring frosts benefit from winter protection. Closely related to Japanese maples, this species belongs to section Palmata and is rarely seen in cultivation outside its native range in China.
