Acer conspicuum Red Flamingo

Acer rubescens (or possibly A. conspicuum) 'Red Flamingo' is a variegated snakebark maple featuring white-striped bark with pink and red young shoots, and leaves that emerge pink-tinged and remain streaked in vivid red-pink with white blotches throughout the growing season. Fall color is notably dramatic, shifting to hot pink and deep red tones that contrast strikingly against the red bark. The tree reaches approximately 15 feet at maturity and has a non-invasive root system. According to the growers at Mr Maple, this cultivar originated as a variegated sport of 'Silver Cardinal' at Esk Valley Nursery in New Zealand and thrives in well-draining sites, particularly when positioned near structures or on slopes; it performs best with some afternoon shade in hotter zones to preserve variegation quality, and produces the characteristic long tassel-like samaras typical of snakebark maples that add architectural interest to the winter landscape.
