Acer buergerianum 'Naruto' Tancho Kaede Trident Maple

Acer buergerianum 'Naruto' is a trident maple distinguished by distinctly cupped and curled foliage that creates an upward-sweeping, origami-like appearance; the leaves point inward toward the stem, resembling birds in flight or hummingbirds gathering around a feeder. The tree reaches 15-20 feet in height over 15 years, making it a vigorous grower with bold orange-to-red autumn color. According to the growers at Mr Maple, 'Naruto' and 'Tancho' (named after a Japanese crane species) refer to the same cultivar, selected in Japan for its unique leaf form. Heat and drought tolerant relative to other Japanese maples, this trident maple succeeds in zones 5-9 and performs well in full sun in warmer regions; it develops handsome bark texture as it matures, providing interest year-round.
